The WMHA City Midget semi finals continued with game 2 on Sunday night in front of a packed Ste. Anne arena. Those in attendance, which included representatives from WMHA and Eastman witnessed a true playoff game and a rivalry that stretched the entire season. The Selects were looking to follow up on a successful afternoon by their Eastman cousins, the Provincal Selects, who won game 1 in their playoffs against the Winnipeg Wild 3-1 in Ste. Adolphe.
As in game 1, the Hawks took the majority of the play to the Selects during the first 5 minutes of the game, peppering the Eastman goal with several scoring opportunities. The scoring opened with 13:50 left in the first period as Eastman got their feet under themselves and began getting out of their zone and putting some pressure on the Hawks. Eastman's line of Kody Kennedy and Colin Baudry dangled their way to the right side of the Hawks zone and centered the puck to Joel Schreyer who made no mistake, putting the Selects up 1-0. The play continued back and forth until the last minute of the period, just as the Selects successfully killed off a penalty, the Eastman defence turned over the puck in their own zone, creating a 2 on 1 in which the Hawks tied the game up. The period was uncharacteristically free from penalties with only 3 minors handed out and the Hawks outshot the Selects 12-7. The intensity continued into the second period and with 14:48 left, Joel Schreyer forced a turnover in the Hawks zone where Kody Kennedy threw the puck towards the Hawks goal where Colin Baudry tipped the go ahead goal in, putting the Selects up again 2-1. The Hawks then produced a carbon copy of the previous goal just 13 seconds later as a turnover in the Eastman zone resulted in the game being tied up again. The Hawks took their first lead of the game with 9:53 remaining on the power play as the Hawks forward stepped around the defence and passed into the slot for a one timer into the Selects goal. Not to be outdone, just 52 seconds later, Taylor Friesen fed a pass to Joel Schreyer, who in turn fed Kody Kennedy, who was stopped on his first shot but potted the rebound to tie things up again. With 6:13 left, just 5 seconds into the power play, Colin Baudry and Kody Kennedy paired up again to feed Joel Schreyer for another one timer to put the Selects up once again. The second period scoring spree ended with 2:23 left as a huge line change mistake resulted in a 4 on 1 break into the Eastman zone where the Hawks tied things up again, squeaking a shot barely over the Eastman goal line. Again, only 3 minor penalties were called resulting in 2 goals and again the Hawks outshot the Selects 17-10. The third period saw two teams determined to win the period, continuing a hard checking game. Four minutes into the period, on the power play, Taylor Friesen passed to Tyler Lanteigne who fed Brock Bram and snapped a shot through a screened Hawks goaltender, putting the Selects up once again. Insurance came to Eastman midway though the period when the Hawks goaltender mishandled a shoot in leaving Brett Allen to make no mistake and score Eastman's sixth goal of the game. The Hawks then, in desperation, threw everything at Selects goaltender Evan Raugust who stood tall in goal throughout the whole game. With 1:30 remaining, the Hawks pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker and scored with :35 seconds remaining through a 3 man screen. Ultimately, the Selects held off the Hawks for the remainder of the game, in which a Hawks player delivered a ruthless hit from behind in the neutral zone after the final buzzer resulting in a game misconduct. The win gave Eastman their first win against the first place Hawks and tying the series at one. The Hawks outshot the Selects again 17-6 in the period for a game total of 46-23 in favor of the Hawks. Game 3 of the Series is scheduled for the Keith Bodley arena on Thursday March 11th at 7:15pm. Game 4 of the series is scheduled for the following night, Friday March 12th at 8pm in Ste. Anne. The Selects wish to thank all their supporters in Sunday's game to cheer them on in the playoffs. REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR NOISE MAKERS TO THE GAME....EVERYONE WHO DOES, GET FREE ADMISSION! |
