The Eastman Selects took to the ice once again in Transcona to play the Winnipeg Sharks. The Sharks are currently fighting with the Hawks for Second place in the league. The Selects found themselves facing an uphill battle with 2 players out due to sickness and injury. The Selects started off the game going toe to toe with the Sharks in a physical battle, not letting down and out working their opposition for the most part. Unfortunately, the Selects found themselves down 1-0 as the Sharks scored on the powere play three and a half minutes in. Eastman didn't let this bother them as they replied back with a vengance, tying up the game only two minutes later where Brock Bram got the puck to Joel Messner who took the shot on a screened Sharks goalie and being deflected in by Kody Kennedy. Eastman kept the pressure up and were rewarded again with 6:26 remaining as Kody Kennedy scored unassisted again through the screen. Kennedy scored the natural hat trick with under a minute remaining on the power play with a shot from the circle with assists going to Tyler Lanteigne and Colin Baudry. A shocked Sharks team exited the first period being behind 3-1. The second period saw no scoring as the Sharks started putting on the pressure including 2 power play opportunities. Unfortunately, the Selects injury woes continued as they lost 2 more players. The Sharks methodically and consistantly added more and more pressure but was turned away on a great performance by Evan Raugust. The Sharks seemed to sense weakness as they continued to put on the pressure on a visibly tired Selects squad. The Sharks got to within a goal as they scored four minutes in on a 2 on 1. Eastman continued to fight off the onslaught with wave after wave Shark attack. Finally with about seven minutes left, again on an odd man rush, the Sharks tied the score at three. The Selects scrambled and fought their way through the rest of the game, managing to hold on to the tie with the Sharks. In the shootout, both teams scored on their first shots, including a nice deke by Colin Baudry. The Selects failed to score again in the shootout while the Sharks managed to score two more times on their 4th and 5th tries. The Selects get one day of rest as they get ready to face the Winnipeg Hawks in the Selkirk arena on Saturday afternoon. |

LONG BUS RIDE GOT LONGER FROM T.B. |
|
A long snowy ride back from Thunder Bay got longer following the third game in two days against the Thunder Bay Kings Sunday morning. The Eastman Selects were revved up for the rubber match against Thunder Bay after splitting the series at one game a piece. The Selects came out of the gates strong, hemming the Kings in their own zone for the better part of the first period. Eastman thought they got the early lead as the puck entered the net early, but the referee called the goal off as a Thunder Bay player knocked the net off as the puck went in without penalty. The Selects kept their cool and kept the pressure on until the 12:29 mark of the first when Kody Kennedy scored with assists going to Tyler Funk and Tyler Lanteigne. The Selects were then victimized (I won't comment any further) thereafter for 3 straight penalties, all resulting in goals by the Kings, leaving the period ending with the Selects down by a score of 3-1. The second period, as in the past, was the Selects' downfall. The Kings had the majority of penalties, but a strong penalty kill resulted in Thunder Bay scoring 4 more times in the period, including 3 short handed goals. The third period had the Selects playing stronger, but the damage was already done. Eastman found themselves frustrated and unable to gain any momentum as they got into penalty trouble yet again. The Kings added 2 more goals, sending the Eastman Selects back on the road with a 9-1 loss. The Selects come away from Thunder Bay giving the Kings only their 4th loss of the season but also ending the Kings season with a league leading 32 wins. The Selects will have to shake this one off quickly as they meet the Sharks on Thursday in Winnipeg and the Hawks on Sunday in Selkirk, both battling for 2nd place overall. |
