SELECTS CRUSH CAPS

The Eastman Selects spent their Sunday afternoon in Portage la Prairie where they met up with the Central Plains Capitals.

The first period started off with both teams getting a chance on the power play early, neither could capitalize.  The Selects held the most offensive opportunities but could not capitalize on their chances.  The only chance capitalized upon was for Central Plains as they took advantage of a giveaway, came down on a 2 on 1 and scored ending the first with a 1-0 lead.

The pressure continued in the second until the 12:48 mark, when Tyler Lanteigne scored on a one-timer with assists going to Tyler Funk and Kevin Smith.  Less than a minute later, the Selects snatched the lead when Joel Schreyer scored unassisted through traffic.  With 8:07 remaining in the second, Tyler Funk finished off a beautiful tic tac toe play with Ryan Wilgosh and Kody Kennedy to make the score 3-1.  Central Plains held the score close as they scored on the power play at 5:45.  But the Eastman boys held firm and answered back again 19 seconds later as Tyler Lanteigne scored on a Tyler Funk rebound.  The Capitals again kept things close as they scored on another turnover which resulted in a breakaway just before the period end. The teams were set for an epic battle with the Selects clinging to a 4-3 lead.

The first half of the third period remained tight as each team received chances but were denied.  That is, until with 7:57 left in the game as Caden Kulsycki scored through traffic off of a feed from behind the net by Tyler McGurry and Colin Baudry.  Then, 30 seconds later, Taylor Friesen took the feed from Josh Buors and Joel Messner down the left wing and cut in towards the goal and made no mistake by scoring Eastman’s sixth goal.  The Capitals became unraveled at this point, taking some bad penalties resulting on an Eastman 5 on 3.  The Selects only took 30 seconds on the power play, scoring on another pretty tic tac toe play by Taylor Friesen, Ryan Lussier and finally finishing by Colin Baudry. The Selects showed no mercy after more cheap tactics by Central Plains, scoring another power play goal as Brock Bram one-timed a feed from Colin Baudry for Eastman’s 8th goal.  With

1:05 left in the game, the Selects added salt to the wounds as Brett Allen, Tyler Funk played catch with the puck on the power play eventually getting the puck to Kody Kennedy for the final goal of the game and claiming a 9-3

win over the Central Plains Capitals

The Selects now practice 3 times this week until they head out on their annual Thunder Bay road swing starting on Saturday January 23rd.  Good Luck Guys!

DROUGHT CONTINUES

The Eastman Selects looked to break a winless drought against teams ahead of them in the standing Wednesday night in Ste. Anne against the Winnipeg Monarchs.  The previous games against the Monarchs have been close tight checking games with the Selects coming out behind, but only a sliver.

The first period started out well with the Selects and Monarchs finishing the period scoreless, even though the Selects were kept on their heels amongst a strong Monarch offensive attack.

The second period favoured the Monarchs first as they scored less than 2 minutes in as the offensive attack finally took it's toll.  Near the midway point of the second period, the Monarchs added to their lead on the power play and with a delayed penalty looming as they scored after Evan Raugust fought off lots of shots during the penalty kill.  Finally, while killing a penaty, Colin Baudry's strong forecheck on another penalty kill forced the Monarch defence to give up the puck in their own zone to Kody Kennedy as he made no mistake, undressing the Monarch goaltender for the Selects first goal, leaving them only one down.  Unfortunately, on the same Monarch power play, Winnipeg scored to retain their 2 goal lead, ending the period at 3-1.

The third period saw no change in the play as Eastman continued to find themselves in the penaty box.  Offensive chances came few and far between. Whereas the Monarchs capitalized on their chances 2 more times ending the game on top 5-1.

The Selects next travel to Portage la Prairie Sunday afternoon as they take on the Central Plains Capitals.

SELECTS BLANK LIGHTNING

The Interlake Lightning was welcomed by the Eastman Selects at  the Ste. Anne arena Monday night.  Eastman came in trying to rebound off of a disappointing loss on Friday night.

Eastman started off firing on all cylinders from the opening face off, hemming Interlake in their own zone for the first minutes of the game.  The pressure paid off 2 1/2 minutes into the game as Stuart Brincheski and Ryan Wilgosh fed Joel Schreyer down the right wing and neatly tucked the puck under the Lightning goaltender for the opening goal.  The scored remained the same until with only .9 seconds left, with Interlake on the power play, the Selects scored short handed  on a strong forecheck Colin Baudry scored with an assist going to Kody Kennedy.

Eastman poured on the pressure for the balance of the second period, when with 17:09 left, Joel Schreyer got his second goal of the night on a nice feed from Tyler McGurry and Stuart Brincheski.  Less than a minute later, Stuart Brincheski scored on a wrap around goal with assists going to Joel Messner and Eric Davis.  The Selects made it a 5 goal lead in the later stages of the period as Taylor Friesen fed the puck to Colin Baudry who laid off a nice drop pass to Kody Kennedy and made no mistake, sniping a shot to the top left corner.

The third period saw Josh Buors clean up for Evan Raugust to preserve the shutout in goal.  The Selects got into penalty trouble for the balance of the third period, limiting their chances to score but did well to kill off the Interlake power play, including a 5 on 3 advantage.  No scoring took place in the period, and the Selects came away with their 2nd shutout of the season.

The Selects now wait until Wednesday in Ste. Anne, as they face the Winnipeg Monarchs, a team that the Selects have yet to beat in a few close contests.  This one is the one we win......right boys?  See you all Wednesday night!
