EASTMAN WINS IN A COLD ONE.

After a prolonged Christmas break and only one practice, the Eastman Selects found themselves in Ste. Eustache to start the 2010 leg of their campaign against the Central Plains Capitals.  To the disappointment of most, no T.V.'S were available in the arena to watch the "other game" between periods so car radios were not far during the game.

The first period saw the Selects enter the sin bin only 10 seconds into the game, giving the Capitals an early power play opportunity.  The Selects weathered the storm with a strong penalty kill, passing their first hurdle of the year. All stayed quiet until with 10:21 left in the period, on the power play, Tyler Lanteigne and Kody Kennedy worked the puck to the point where Joel Messner unloaded a shot past the Central Plains goaltender for a 1-0 lead.  The Capitals tied it up with 6:14 left and the teams went to the first intermission tied at 1.

The second period, although scoreless, featured the Selects relentlessly forechecking, cycling and shooting in the Capitals zone, where the Selects could not seem to solve the Capitals goaltending.

The third period saw much of the same pressure in the Central Plains end to no avail until midway through the period, Joel Messner fed the puck low to Stuart Brincheski where a wraparound attempt was stopped but the rebound found it's way in to put the Selects in front.  The Selects scored again 5 minutes later as once again, Joel Messner fed a stretch pass, sending Colin Baudry in on the left side, past the defence where he made no mistake, neatly putting the puck past the goaltender for the Selects final goal and rounding out a 3-1 victory.

The Selects now await their first meeting of the season with the first place team from Thunder Bay.  The game is scheduled for Friday January 8th at 7:30 in Ste. Anne. Until then, the Eastman boys will practice on Wednesday and dryland train on Thursday.

EASTMAN SELECTS SAY MERRY XMAS TO BRANDON

The Brandon Wheat Kings rolled into town Saturday afternoon for the Eastman Selects last game before Santa comes.  The Selects wanted to give themselves an early christmas present with a win and did not disappoint.  The Selects welcomed 2 call up's Stuart Shewfelt for the second time as Josh Buors battles a bug.  and Dylan Betteridge answered the call to help out the team with Eric Raugust still out with his injury.

The first period saw both teams get off to a slower than expected start with limited chances on both sides.  Taylor Friesen had the best chance, hitting the post on a point blank slapshot from the deep slot.  The Selects finally scored with 2:46 left in the frame as Brett Allen opened the scoring, assisted by Tyler Lanteigne in a short handed effort.  With less than a minute remaining, Taylor Friesen got the puck to Ryan Wilgosh, took the shot and was deflected at waist height by Caden Kulcsycki to end the period 2-0.

The second period began the same as the first where neither team could generate scoring opportunities, although a shot off of a Selects skate was disallowed.  With 13:44 left in the period, Colin Baudry took a pass from Kody Kennedy, snapped a quick shot that squeaked thru the goaltenders pads and Tyler Lanteigne tapped in the loose puck.  Two minutes later, Tyler McGurry scored on the deflection, the goal being assisted by Caden Kulcsycki and Dylan Betteridge (for his first midget AAA point).  Again, two minutes after that, a beautiful tic, tac, toe play saw Tyler Lanteigne tic-ing, Colin Baudry tac-ing and Kody Kennedy toe-ing to put a strangle hold on the game at 5-0 at the end of the 2nd.

In the third period The Selects saw a second disallowed goal on Brandon's net.  With only three and a half minutes remaining, Brandon finally solved Evan Raugust, on the power play with their first goal to break Eastman's shutout bid.  With the win, the Selects go into the Christmas break, solidly in 5th place with a 10-9-2 record.  After the break, the Eastman boys prepare for the stretch run, starting the new year out in St. Eustache, playing against the Central Plains Capitals on January 5th.

So, from the entire Eastman City Selects team, we would like to wish our entire readership a safe, and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
